Staying Cool While Breastfeeding: Tips for Mums

Breastfeeding is such a special and beautiful bonding experience, but let’s be real—it can get uncomfortably hot, especially during Australia’s sweltering summers. I vividly remember one scorching day, trying to breastfeed my son while sweat dripped down my back & between my boobs, the heat felt relentless, and keeping a nursing cover in place became an impossible task. My little one was fussing, I was flustered, and all I could think was, “there has to be an easier way!” If this sounds familiar, trust me - you’re not alone!

Over time, I picked up a few simple tricks to keep breastfeeding sessions cooler and calmer for both mum and baby. These little tips made a world of difference, and I hope they help you, too.

Finding Ways to Beat the Heat

Over time, I started picking up little tricks to make those hot breastfeeding sessions more manageable. Here are a few tips I wish I’d known earlier:

1. Choose the Right Fabrics: Light, breathable fabrics like cotton or muslin are your best friends. Not only are they gentle on your baby’s skin, but they also help reduce the stifling heat.

2. Cool Down Before You Start: Before settling down to feed, take a moment to cool off. A quick splash of cool water on your face, neck, and wrists can bring instant relief.

3. Stay Hydrated: I can’t emphasise this enough - always keep a cold water bottle nearby during feeds. Staying hydrated not only helps you feel better but also supports milk production.

4. Find a Breeze: Sit near a fan, open window, or under a shady tree when outdoors. A little airflow can make all the difference.

5. Use Cooling Accessories: Cooling towels, portable fans, and even chilled gel packs tucked against your back can offer a refreshing escape from the heat.

The Inspiration Behind a Better Solution

It was during one of those stifling summer feeds that I had an idea: What if there was a way to combine the privacy of a nursing cover with a gentle, cooling breeze? I’d often wished for a little airflow under the cover, but traditional options didn’t offer it.

After talking to other mums who shared similar struggles, I realised I wasn’t alone in this. That’s what led to the concept of designing Breezy Feed's Nursing Cooling Cover with a built-in fan. It’s a small innovation, but one that can make a world of difference during breastfeeding - helping keep you and your little one cool, comfortable, and fuss-free.

The journey of breastfeeding is different for everyone, and sometimes it takes a bit of trial and error to find what works best for you. Whether it’s choosing breathable fabrics, staying hydrated, or exploring tools like nursing cooling covers, small adjustments can make feeding sessions much more comfortable.

If you’ve discovered any tips or tricks for staying cool while breastfeeding, I’d love to hear them! Sharing our experiences can help make this journey a little easier for everyone. Let’s support each other - because we’re all in this together.
